“When I sell liquor, it’s bootlegging. When my patrons serve it on a silver tray on Lakeshore Drive, it’s hospitality.”
Wise Guys is a quick to learn, cut throat, area control boardgame where you play as one of four rival gangs seeking to strike it rich as “Rum Runners” on the rough streets of Chicago at the height of the roaring 20’s.
Each turn players wheel, deal, talk and fight to control locations where they buy and sell alcohol, help politicians get elected and get help in return or double-cross rival gangs. Negotiate, threaten and ally with rival gangs when it serves your needs, but be wary of the inevitable knife in the back…
Players roll to choose their gang, then set themselves up with a respectable front of neighbourhood business men and their associates, whilst keeping their resources, money, guns & booze hidden from their rivals.
Taking control of real-life gangsters, such as Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, Dean O’Banion, ‘Polack Joe’ Saltis and Ralph Sheldon, players issue orders for their Made Men & Associates to drive to existing or newly revealed locations, exploiting profitable opportunities as they arise.

Welcome to Chicago
Wise Guys is extremely replayable. The layout of the city changes for every game you play, with different locations presenting new challenges, and new opportunities as you build your operation. You place 5 starting location tiles that are always part of the landscape and 6 extra random locations that get shuffled and placed unseen to make up the mean streets of Chicago. With a total of 24 location tiles, you are guaranteed to face something new every time you play!
Made Men and Associates
Made Men are the upper echelon of a gang. They have been initiated into the inner circle and use their greater power and experience to take control of Locations. Some are hardened killers, perfect for a slugging, while others have a silver tongue or are in league with powerful public figures, giving them an edge in talking their way through negotiations. You can tell a Made Man because they have larger tokens with individual names.
Associates are the rank and file of the gang, whether junior members or hangers-on associated with the gang. They can Exploit Locations for profit, but cannot Fight for Locations on their own.
In order to win you are going to need to be the gang holding the most cash at the end of the six game rounds. You can make money by exploiting locations, for either profit, trade, or outright theft from rival factions.
…And you can sell on the black market. Prohibition has hit Chicago hard and that means business is booming for black market booze, and you are more than happy to supply it. Be careful though… if you and the rival gangs start selling too much in a round then the cash flow is going to start drying up, keep the supply and demand in the sweet spot and keep track of your rivals.
